Turkish passport with a world map of visa-free destinations

As of September 2026, an ordinary Turkish passport gives access to 112 destinations without a visa obtained in advance, according to the Henley Passport Index, which places it 49th in its 2026 ranking. That total includes 73 destinations that are visa-free, 33 with a visa on arrival and 6 that ask for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before departure. The Schengen area, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada still require a visa.

Visa rules change often, and several changed in 2026 alone. Always check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs page for your destination before you travel.

Henley's categories are broad: some destinations it counts as "visa on arrival" are treated as visa-free by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the other way round. The count is a useful guide, not a legal rule.

Where a visa is still required

A Turkish ordinary passport still needs a visa for the Schengen area (all EU members in Schengen plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), the United Kingdom (even for transit, unless you meet the conditions of the transit-without-visa concession), Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China and India. The Ministry advises applying for Schengen visas early and notes that many countries do not accept visa applications with a passport issued more than ten years ago.

Getting a Turkish passport through investment

Foreign investors can acquire Turkish citizenship by buying property worth at least USD 400,000 and keeping it for at least three years, with a no-sale annotation on the title deed. The spouse and children under 18 can be included. (The threshold was USD 250,000 from September 2018 until June 2022, and USD 1 million before that.) Once citizenship is granted, each family member can apply for an ordinary Turkish passport.

What this means for buyers

  • Travel access is a benefit, not a guarantee. The list changes: Thailand shortened its visa-free stay in September 2026, while Sri Lanka made its ETA free in May 2026.
  • Europe and North America still need visas. If visa-free travel to the Schengen area, the UK or the US is your main goal, a Turkish passport does not provide it today.
  • Check before every trip. Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page and the embassy of your destination, especially for rules on passport validity and insurance.
